#startracking Wednesday April 13th 11am

I’m running out of time here! I posted Newmarket (Wednesday) last night and so I will cover Cheltenham and Beverley now and I will put yesterday’s results and reviews in tonight’s blog at 7pm.

CheltenhamGreat card especially for a Wednesday. Run well here and you can get your mark up to a level to play with the big boys in those valuable handicaps at the three big pre-Christmas cards back at Cheltenham, a real stepping stone. A few catch my eye.

2.35 BERTIE BORU Real stayer who could enjoy the hill. Just needs to put in a clear round. Been in my notebook since running on behind Caroles Destrier at Sandown, indeed his CV suggests a preference for going right handed but with Ladbrokes offering 10/1 (¼ 1,2,3,4) he is a one star* each way selection.

3.00 DRUMLEE SUNSET Really enjoy these big field handicaps. Drumlee Sunset could be better than these and I think he could well have the proverbial 10lb in hand. Trip, ground, course, yard, jockey, weight all fine. He is another Hobbs novice that could benefit from a clear round but the big field handicap scenario worked for Wait for Me and could work for DC. Creepy, creepy ride from Mr Johnson, arrive late, power up the hill please. He is a two star** win selection @ 8/1 general.

3.35 What a great race this is. 13yo Wishfull Thinking carries 11st 10lb and the bottom four are out of the handicap in a ten runner G2 Limited handicap over 2m 5f. My eye is immediately drawn to Johns Spirit on just 10st 4lb!!

Here’s what I wrote before The Brown Advisory plate at the Festival, “Has winning course form around this trip, has dropped 12lbs since the start of the season and is trained by the master of setting one up for the Festival JJ O’Neill. Needs Good in the going description and every time he has run this season the ground has gone against him. Stands out like a sore thumb and has been on my list since November BUT there are two issues. Firstly his form on the Old and the New courses at Cheltenham and his style of running i.e he’s a hold up horse and you need to be a prominent/front running type!

Captnevillecazalet on wordpress points out On the face of it he’s supremely well handicapped but it’s a well-known fact that his best Cheltenham form – and his best is very good – is all on the Old Course, 7,1,1,1,2,9. On the New Course his figures read 6,5,4,5,9,6,4 and until he shows that there isn’t anything in the course preference angle, I’m happy to pass.”

Hopes dashed, this race is on the NEW course!

Process of elimination works here. Wishfull Thinking is older than me! Tenor Ninorvais needs mud. Johns Spirit is on the New course not the Old. Voix d’Eaux is a Cheltenham virgin who needs to strengthen nup. Art Mauresque is out of the handicap and out of form and to put it politely Splash of Ginge has his own ideas about the game!

That leaves just CLOUDY COPPER who won over C & D at this meeting last year and has been waiting for this better ground. At 7/1 general he is a one star* win selection.

4.10 FORT WORTH #startracking horse who has run dismally since a solid second at the Paddy Power meeting. Not sure he gets the 3m, so it’s a Watching brief today and we will look forward to this son of Presenting going novice chasing later this year.

4.45 FOX NORTON I think this is a penalty kick unless his two thirds to Douvan at Grade 1 level at the Festival and Aintree (beaten a country mile both times!) have taken their toll. 11/8 with Coral and Ladbrokes and he is a two star** win selection.

The Master of Musley Bank runs four at Beverley today and I don’t fancy any of them!

Top weight Arctic Feeling in a C3 5F handicap drawn 2 with Sammy Jo Bell taking off three pounds could be a player but I can never work this horse out, so I will pass!

Clayton Hall has his third run before his handicapping destiny. The 2yo debutante is drawn wide and whose dam won over hurdles! Zahrat Narjis would need to show definite improvement but worth noting Fahey bought her back when she was sent to the Sales last Autumn.

Not a great start to the British Turf season for Paul Hanagan!
