An interesting weekends racing with Paul Nicholls cranking the pressure up in the Trainers title adding spice to later in the week where Willie Mullins has entries in the £25K chase at Warwick on Thursday, the three days at Perth Weds-Fri. and all culminating in a blockbusting card at Sandown on Saturday featuring Sprinter Sacre v Un de Sceaux.
For me two other points of interest were the defeat of Aasheq in a Navan maiden, although Irish correspondents are suggesting putting a line through that cards form and the form of the Fahey stable (Saturday-221243861) which is starting to rock and roll!
Loads to look forward to this week. Pontefract, Beverley and Doncaster with Ryan Moore booked to ride in Yorkshire! An absolute belter of a flat card at Sandown on Friday and night racing is back!
Pontefract 2.40 SPRING OFFENSIVE He has been smashed in the market from 6/1 to 5/2 and is a sea of blue on Oddschecker. This is the lowest grade handicap he has run in, he’s only a pound higher than his last winning mark and he will handle the Soft ground which is all very attractive. However I have three concerns. Firstly I think he wants a flat course, which Pontefract ain’t! Secondly he takes time to get going and I’m not sure he’ll get that and thirdly much as I think Adam McNamara is worth his 7lb claim he is drawn 4 on a hold up horse and I’m not sure he has the course nous to get out of a possible pocket. If the gaps come at the right time he could hack up but for me he is a WATCHING BRIEF.
Here’s what I wrote in the “Richard Fahey Alternative, Unofficial Stable Tour”, “Back down to within a pound of his last winning mark his turn can’t be far away. He has run well at flat tracks such as Redcar and especially Musselburgh where the longer straights help him organise his powerful finish. C3 8F with some guaranteed pace would be ideal but he could be competitive up in grade and maybe even 9/10F. Good ground is ideal.”
Pontefract 3.10 BALLYMORE CASTLE Here’s what I wrote in the “Richard Fahey Alternative, Unofficial Stable Tour”, “Didn’t win as a 3yo but competed in the Sales races and at Listed level. Seems to go on any ground and could easily land a C2 or C3 6F handicap off 95. Didn’t stay 7F on his final run. Will need to be monitored as there is a possibility that he keeps a bit for himself? Ran in a 6F C3 handicap off OR95 at Doncaster’s opening meeting, travelled really well to the 2F pole and was just one paced. Fahey had said prior to the race “Ballymore Castle has been a badly handicapped horse since his two-year-old days and might still need some help from the assessor.” This run looked like they were trying to remedy that situation!”
Well he is down another pound to OR94. I’ve sort of got it in my mind that he will get down to OR90 and below then bolt in at York or Chester possibly in a C3 where he could lead? Midfield mediocrity here and he is a WATCHING BRIEF.
Pontefract 2.10 Springwood Drops a grade having weakened from the furlong pole in the Brocklesby. Drawn well and sure to improve but more interested in 7F+ nurseries further down the line.
Pontefract 3.10 Beardwood Has run well twice here before. Started last season off well but didn’t go on when upped to 7F albeit in better races than this. Drawn well in 3 of 12 has the valuable assistance of 3lb claimer Sammy Jo Bell and of the two Fahey horses at the head of the market I prefer this one and make him a two star** win selection @ 9/2 general.
Pontefract 4.10 Dacoity placed in three low grade maidens last season, now gelded, runs in those lucky “Touch” colours. Too many dangers to back here @ 5/2, the Ryan pair and the Beckett filly is a long way from home!
Pontefract 4.45 Johnny B Goode Hasn’t won since his 2yo days and drops back to the minimum trip.
Pontefract 5.15 Arcano Gold Here is what #amazingMrFahey said at the start of last season “Arcano Gold is a horse I love. He’s one for handicaps but is very genuine and tries hard and has done extremely well over the winter. We’re delighted with him.” Fahey Stable Tour Sporting Life 2015 You would have to be disappointed by his 2015 campaign (5823707) but they have kept him in training, he’s down from OR88 to OR84, he didn’t stay the 10F on Lincoln day but has had a run. I can see Tony Hamilton bouncing him out of stall 1 and making every yard. He’s beenwell supported from 6/1 to 4/1 and I still make him a two star** win selection @ 4/1 general.
#startracking Saturdays Results
Chelmsford 2.10 DARTMOUTH 1st 3/1 Watching Brief. 3rd took trail, went 2nd two wide 6F out, led 2F out won well. Not the strongest G3 but there goes my Ascot handicap plan! Another showing the wellbeing of the Stoute yard who said afterwards “He’s in the Jockey Club stakes. Stepping up to 14F, but not on soft.”
Chelmsford 3.15 TASLEET 1st 4/7Fav He is a two star** win selection if you can get odds against. Currently Evens with Ladbrokes. Disappointing three runner turnout for the “Betfred World Snooker starts today” (Yuk!!) G3 Greenham. Led, got rail. Didn’t run bend well, just held on. No surprise to hear it’s the Jersey or more likely the Commonwealth Cup for him with Paul Hanagan suggesting “a fast six is what he wants.”
Chelmsford 3.50 GABRIALS KAKA 1st 4/1 Watching Brief. Just typical of the old rogue to hack up. Paul Hanagan said “He travelled round for fun, coming through seemed to spur him on.” Case for saying even with a 7lb penalty, which should get him back in the big C2’s, he is still well in.
Chelmsford 5.00 DARSHINI 1st 6/4Fav He is a one star win* @ 3/1 with Ladbrokes. On rail, travelled in 3rd, pulled three wide off final bend, stayed on well in this C3 10F handicap off OR87. Could well have a York/Ascot C2 10F handicap in him. John Smiths at York (Sat. July 9th) would suit this prominent racing stayer. May need another win to get in?
Ayr 3.00 STERNRUBIN 10th 8/1 I think he is a cracking two star** each way selection @ 10/1 with the ever generous William Hill. Led to two out weakened! Plain disappointing. Inconsistent, Good/Bad/Good/Bad!
Ayr 3.00 SOME PLAN 4th 14/1 Nervous Watching Brief! One pace fourth, again. Has talent but just not quite enough! Novice chasing next season? Not bred for it.
Ayr 3.00 IVAN GROZNY 5th 11/4Fav a one star* win saver @ 4/1 general. They went a stride quicker in this but he was still swinging on the bridle two out but four others quickened as well and this was a hot C2 handicap.
Ayr 4.10 Scottish National. Scruffy at his fences did for Shotgun Paddy, Heathfield never got involved but Masters Hill gave us a great run taking the field along all the way to two out and as he weakened it looked like Royale Knight might bring home the bacon but he was one paced at the finish.
Royale Knight 4th 20/1 one star win* @ 14/1 general
Heathfield PU 9/1 one star win* @ 14/1 general
Shotgun Paddy PU 20/1 one star win* @ 25/1 general
Masters Hill 8th 28/1 two star** each way @ 40/1 @ Coral (¼ 1,2,3,4)
Ayr 4.45 ARBRE DE VIE 3rd 3/1Fav a four star**** NAP selection @ 4/1 with Paddy Power. That price is disappearing fast! Desperately want to see the race again. In real time I thought he got no racing room from the third last to the last. I just wanted Paul Townend to pull him wide and take the handbrake off!! Even so not sure he would have beaten the winner, Two Taffs.
Sorry I missed these two out of last Tuesdays results, they were both Watching Briefs.
GRANDADS WORLD for the Fahey/Moore combo went off favourite but once again the horse failed to fire at Newmarket. Get him down a pound and a 6/7F C3 (?-95) on a flat track should do the biz!
GAMESOME Never competitive here. I think he could land one of the very big Heritage C2 sprints this year when Mr Midgely has him tuned up and has Graham Lee or Paul Mulrennan on board. York could be the place?
Thirsk 1.45 ONE BOY 2nd 11/2 one star* win dabble @ 6/1 with Ladbrokes Had every chance and will win at thid grade and trip. Young Adam McNamara got in a bit of a tangle with his whip hand at the furlong pole. Professional handling might have got him home.
Nottingham 7.55 DANCING YEARS 1st 4/1 a one star win* @ a huge 9/2 with PP. I was impressed. A point and go sprinter who I think may have more to come, especially against her own sex. Put it to bed nicely a furlong out and wouldn’t worry about a step up to 6F.
Nottingham 5.55 Scottish Summit 4th 5/2 Looks like a novice chaser. Chunky, will take time! Well backed.
Wolver. 7.40 Muwaary 2nd 2/1 Stoute put a visor on him. Well may have bumped into one here in Michael Bell’s Batts Rock.
Chelmsford 1.35 Mustashry 2nd 7/1 Winner Waiting To Happen in an 8F maiden.
Chelmsford 1.35 Poets Word 3rd 3/1 Green, lit up. Needs stepping up in trip and 10F+
Chelmsford 1.35 El Hayem 4th 16/1 £350K yearling. Late may foal. Will improve.
