Its Guineas weekend already and some great racing at HQ. Good back up cards at Goodwood (keep an eye on Jamie Spencer), Thirsk (ground could be key) and Doncaster (#FantasticMrFahey could be in business!).
Punchestown Festival Day Five is my last interest in the jumps until Chepstow in the Autumn and THAT horse is down to run. DE NAME ESCAPES ME has been the subject of two ante post plunges this season already and hasn’t got to the post in either!! Today he has SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much in his favour except he is trained by Noel Meade, who is 1 from 57 for this Festival, hasn’t had a winner in April and everything he sends to the track runs like a drain! (see Disko yesterday!!!). I can’t recommend him as anything but a Watching Brief and the same applies To Rathnure Rebel in the following race.
#startracking Runners Saturday
Newmarket 4.55 ABDON/SKY KINGDOM/SPEED COMPANY No outstanding morning prices so it is a Watching Brief for all three in a race that could well contain a hatful of future Group race winners!
16:55 Newmarket – Speed Company He wouldn’t be the biggest but I was pretty taken by the way in which he quickened up for me to win a handicap off 89 here last month, winning pretty snugly after looking an unlikely winner for much of the race. This step up in class looks more than justified but he clearly needs to improve again to be beating the likes of Cymric, whose Lagardere second marks him out as the clear form choice and the one to beat, and the extra 2f shouldn’t be a problem for him. But this field is full of unexposed 3yos. The boss’s Newbury winner Abdon is a nice colt, Sky Kingdom was impressive when winning the Wood Ditton and Tathqeef‘s third in the Fielden was not without promise. In summary, we all have Cymric to beat, but plenty in here have the potential to give him a race, and I hope that I am one of them. Ryan Moore/Betfair April 30th
Newmarket 2.00 SPRING OFFENSIVE (See Friday Blog)
Newmarket 4.20 STAMP HILL (See Friday Blog)
Newmarket 5.30 DOLPHIN VISTA (See Friday Blog)
Goodwood 2.50 RIGHT TOUCH (See Friday Blog)
Thirsk 2.45 ONE BOY OK on first start for new yard and well drawn. One star* win @ 7/1 WH.
Thirsk 2.45 ROYAL CONNOISSEUR Win in his turn low grade sprinter on seasonal debut. Pass.
Thirsk 3.55 HOME CUMMINS Likeable filly with solid form getting a positive mention in trainers weekend blog. “Home Cummins is working extremely well ahead of her reappearance in the totepool Thirsk Hunt Cup. Again you’d have to be worried she might just need it but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if she ran a big race even though she’s drawn wider than I’d ideally want in 14.” One star* e/w @ 14/1 Betfred + Ladbrokes.
Newmarket 3.45 RIBCHESTER Fingers crossed for a great run but I think he is G2 at best. Watching Brief.
Doncaster 5.15 IN MY PLACE If the trainer says the horse is “disappointing” an “I don’t have the key”, a definite Watching Brief!
Doncaster 5.45 CANYARI Plenty in his favour here, course, trip, ground, jockey and I just rushed to Betfred to get the 8/1! Two star** each way selection.
Doncaster 6.15 L’APOGEE Wait for handicaps. Pass
Doncaster 6.45 CHAMPION HARBOUR “Bogged down” on debut at Nottingham and expected to improve for a run. One star* win selection @ 7/2 with PP.
Doncaster 7.15 ANOTHER TOUCH Did me a big favour at Ayr last backend and loath to desert the horse. Trainer suggests he will “come on for the run” and bigger fish to fry down the line. One star* win selection @ 6/1 with Ladbrokes.
Doncaster 7.15 YOUNG JOHN All went wrong at Royal Ascot last year but he went there with a chance and this is a C2 handicap off OR83!! One star* win selection @ 12/1 general.
Goodwood 5.10 PELOPONNESE Niarchos homebred colt by Montjeu who will probably want 12F+ in time. Three runs as a 2yo in C4/5 maidens showing limited promise but starts off life handicapping off just OR67 and Ted durcan has the ride. One star* win selection @ 6/1 general.
