A little something to read between races at Chester. Need to have pen and paper ready and then get busy in your trackers!
It is about time I posted the recent results and reports for our #startracking runners.
Tuesday Nottingham 5.20 EVANGELICAL 1st 11/10Fav Three star*** selection @ 15/8 with PP. Half reared, missed break. Steadily made ground up, led 1F out, won comfortably, impressive. Young McNamara failed to change whip hand despite two attempts!
Wednesday Pontefract 3.45 ENGAGE 2nd 9/4 One star* win selection @ 11/4 general. Stroppy at stalls, Monty Roberts. Held up, took too long to wake up. Not the biggest?
Wednesday Ascot 4.30 MOHEET 8th 16/1 @ 16/1 with Coral he is a one star* each way bet. RP Analysis “In touch in midfield, effort entering final 2f, driven and beaten over 1f out, soon weakened, finished lame.”
Wednesday Wolverhampton 5.45 DORA’S FIELD 10th 8/1 Watching Brief Held up right out the back. Schooling in public! Been given an OR71 which is very workable on that Newmarket run.
Thursday Lingfield 3.20 BARLEYSUGAR 3rd 7/2JF (4/1 early) Two star** win selection @ 4/1 general Took trail on rail. Lost place 5F out as horse in front settled and rest of field went past outside. Pulled off rail, then wide into straight. Kept on well but race was over. A mile on quick-ish turf will do nicely. OR86 (AW85)
Thursday Redcar 4.10 JORDAN SPORT 1st 3/1 (4/1 early) Two star** win selection @ 4/1 general Jamie Spencer at his best on a willing partner. Held up and made to settle, got gap 1F out and hosed up. Handicapper put him up 7lbs to OR82.
Thursday Chelmsford 7.30 DANNYDAY 1st 7/4Fav (7/2 early rule 4 20p in £ 2.8/1) Two star** win selection @ 7/2 general C3 13.5F, solid pace. Rear, couple wide but travelled, made ground 3F to 2F, led top of straight and further they went the better he looked. Well supported and hacked up. OR up 6lbs from 85 to 91. Another win and he could be an Ebor horse?
Saturday Newmarket 2.00 MUTAMAKKIN 8th 9/2JF He is a two star** win selection @ 3/1 with PP and WH. Travelled found nothing. Better ground? Stiff mile?
Saturday Newmarket 2.00 SPRING OFFENSIVE 11th 12/1 He is a one star* each way selection @ 12/1 but I would hold fire to later on as 1,2,3,4 ¼ should be available and take the best double figure price you can get under those conditions. Travelled just behind, but not good enough?
Saturday Newmarket 2.00 LAURENCE Non Runner SECOND STEPS 4th 16/1
Saturday Newmarket 4.20 VENTUROUS 3rd 4/1 a one star* win selection @ 9/2 with PP. Travelled strongly and never got a clean break as stablemate Yatwee carried him right. OK.
Saturday Newmarket 4.20 STAMP HILL 5th 5/1 a one star* win selection @ 7/1+. Had widest draw, did well to get some cover and kept on for a close 5th. C2 7F 3yo should be fine.
Saturday Newmarket 5.30 DOLPHIN VISTA 2nd 7/1 PP go 6/1 (and anything from that and above when more firms price up) makes him a one star* win selection. Really good run, raced prominently, and only the well supported favourite Folkswood beat him home. Really like to see him 8F C2 3yo at YORK, where he is 1 from 1, beating Carenot!
Saturday Goodwood 2.50 RIGHT TOUCH 4th 10/1 a one star* each way at 16/1 with WH (1,2,3,4 ¼)!
Saturday Newmarket 4.55 Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes (Listed) 10F 3yo
I think you can put all eight of these in your tracker. After the 2000 Guineas earlier the formbook said Cymric was a good thing and he trailed in last! There was no pace to the race and Beaverbrook made it on sufferance and Richard Hoiles succinctly put it in commentary “it has turned into a bit of a dash”!
Saturday Newmarket 4.55 ABDON 2nd 9/2 Watching Brief
On only his second start he was awkward out of the stalls and keen through the first furlong but soon settled, travelled but wanted more cover. The winner got first run and Abdon couldn’t claw it back. Been given a tough opening OR102. Suggests it will be Listed and above, 10F+. Entries in the Dante, the Derby and Edward VII at Royal Ascot.
Saturday Newmarket 4.55 SKY KINGDOM 3rd 11/4 Fav Watching Brief
Clumsy out of the stalls on his second run but soon prominent and tanking along, never really got a clear run and had to be switched three horses wide but kept on strongly. Has been given OR100, has entries in the Dante, the Derby and Edward VII at Royal Ascot and probably needs 12F already.
Saturday Newmarket 4.55 SPEED COMPANY 4th 9/2 Watching Brief
Dropped in rear and was the strongest finisher of the eight albeit never competitive. Up 1lb to OR97 and a C2 10F+ handicap could be his for the taking. As a hold up horse prefer Newmarket or Ascot to York or Haydock!
As for the others Beaverbrook OR97 needs to find his trip (9F?). Possibly C2 10F handicap round Chester or York? Cymric looked a tad burly to me and Gosden is really embracing headgear this season and Cymric wore cheekpieces and the BHA stewards got involved. “The Stewards considered the running of CYMRIC (USA) ridden by James Doyle and trained by John Gosden, which finished unplaced. The Stewards noted the explanation of the trainer’s representative that the colt would probably be dropped back in trip in the future.”
It’s onwards and upwards for the winner, Hawkbill, who was in the right place throughout the race and showed a nice change of gear going into The Dip. The Godolphin website reported “Progressive three-year-old Hawkbill (Charlie Appleby/William Buick) recorded a fourth straight victory as he comfortably won the 10-furlong Listed Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes on his seasonal return at Newmarket, UK, on Saturday, April 30. John Ferguson, Chief Executive and Racing Manager of Godolphin, said: “Hawkbill has grown up mentally over the winter. We took him to Dubai and a lot of the horses who were out there over the winter have come back here and run really well.
“I was delighted with the way he really stayed today and it looks like he will get further. I will talk to H H Sheikh Mohammed regarding options but we have big races like the Investec Derby and the French Derby next month.
“We could think about another trial beforehand. The Dante Stakes at York (May 12) might come a bit early and he could go for a race like the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood (May 20). Charlie will get him home and we will think about it. It was a pleasing performance today because I think it was a fair race.” Entered in the G2 3yo 12F Edward VII at Royal Ascot.
As in the Fielden Stakes Tathqeef was one paced but could still be competitive off OR95 in a decent 3yo handicap. Has entries in the Dante, the Derby and Edward VII at Royal Ascot but this son of Tapit looks a Good/Firm miler to me.
Finally Karl Burke’s son of Sir Percy, Percy Street, wearing a first time visor was caught out for toe when they quickened and is probably not up to Listed standatd, yet! 12F, some cut in the ground, a strong pace and a bit of cover he could take a C2 3yo handicap off OR95 (75-95?) before returning to this level in the Autumn.
Add the final five to the #tracker you have the Craven report entries in, give them three runs and let’s see what happens.
Tuesday Nottingham 2.35 BELLE TRAVERS 4th 15/8Fav Pass. Out OK, inside rail, box seat. Travelled, asked 3F out, angled out 2F, one paced fourth. Has to go on my “Run but without my money” list.
Tuesday Nottingham 3.05 MISS VAN GOGH 1st 12/1 One star* each way at a large looking 12/1 general. Held up in rear by Paul Hanagan, pulled out at 3F pole, steady progress from last to first and she hacked up! OR82 plus what? Put in #startracker! Give her three runs.
Tuesday Nottingham 3.35 PERCEYVIVACE WITHDRAWN 8.52am Great!
Tuesday Wolverhampton 6.30 CURTAIN CALL 3rd 25/1 C4 6F well away, three wide, always prominent, kept on OK. Showed some speed. Cheveley Park homebred daughter of Acclamation and bred to be quick. 5F, Good to Soft, against Fillies, C5 possibly C4. OR78 Put in #startracker! Give her three runs.
Wednesday Pontefract 2.00 MELESINA Non Runner
Wednesday Pontefract 2.00 SPRINGFORTH 3rd 7/1 Watching Brief. Drawn widest, slow away, green. Ran on for 3rd. Will win.
Wednesday Pontefract 3.10 NORMANDY KNIGHT 9th 12/1 At 16/1 with Betfred it’s worth a one star* each way wager to find out! Out well, prominent, three wide. Leaders went too quick, faded from 300 yards out. Better for run. Will improve on good+ ground.
Wednesday Pontefract 3.45 COSMIC HALO 5th 11/1 No longer a betting medium unless its 10F/York/Hanagan!
Wednesday Pontefract 5.25 PICCARDO 8th 9/1 Watching Brief for this gelded son of Piccolo. Could win at this level, C5 6F, needs to strengthen up.
Thursday Redcar 2.35 BROCKHOLES 2nd 9/1 An Armstrong/Highfield Farm homebred daughter of Equiano. Made debut as a 3yo in 7F C5 Maiden. Travelled, prominent and kept on well for second. Put in #startracker! Give her three runs.
Thursday Redcar 4.10 JORDAN SPORT 1st 3/1 (See Above)
Saturday Newmarket 2.00 SPRING OFFENSIVE 11th 12/1 (See Above)
Saturday Newmarket 4.20 STAMP HILL 5th 5/1 (See Above)
Saturday Newmarket 5.30 DOLPHIN VISTA 2nd 7/1 (See Above)
Saturday Goodwood 2.50 RIGHT TOUCH 4th 10/1 (See Above)
Saturday Thirsk 2.45 ONE BOY 7th 8/1 One star* win @ 7/1 WH. Always there or thereabouts but one paced final furlong. Looks a low grade win-in-his-turn sprinter and has to go on my “Run but without my money” list.
Saturday Thirsk 2.45 ROYAL CONNOISSEUR 9th 16/1 Pass. Another low grade win-in-his-turn sprinter and already on my “Run but without my money” list.
Saturday Thirsk 3.55 HOME CUMMINS 12th 12/1 One star* e/w @ 14/1 Betfred + Ladbrokes. Attracted a little market support but stuffed by the draw out in stall 14. Notes say “pushed all the way, one pace.” Handicapper needs to relent from OR89 and she goes on the “Only If…” list. Only interested If she comes down to OR85.
Saturday Newmarket 3.45 RIBCHESTER 2nd 33/1 Fingers crossed for a great run but I think he is G2 at best. Watching Brief. Probably stick with my original thoughts but a great run all the same. With Emotionless on the sidelines I think Ribchester will be carrying the Godolphin 3yo 8F G1 baton for a while. Tough gig!
Saturday Doncaster 5.15 IN MY PLACE 6th 16/1 Watching Brief! Travelled well, needed racing room, never got a run. BHA Stewards Report “Sammy Jo Bell, the rider of IN MY PLACE, which was unplaced, reported that the gelding was denied a clear run.” Winner waiting to happen under similar circumstances. 6½F+, C5, Good to Soft+. Put in #startracker! Give him three runs.
Saturday Doncaster 5.45 CANYARI 8th 11/2JF Betfred to get the 8/1! Two star** each way selection. Slow to gather pace, only two behind. Progress 3F out. Kept on from halfway but race was on other side and when chance had gone just hands and heels final furlong. Well supported, 8/1 to 9/2JF, and only 1lb above last winning mark. Turn isn’t far away with Doncaster the likely venue.
Saturday Doncaster 6.15 L’APOGEE 6th 16/1 Pass As big as 40/1 earlier this was his third run and it looked like it! Tony Hamilton never got busy with him when he couldn’t get placed. This gelded son of Rip Van Winkle goes handicapping off just OR62! Wouldn’t be surprised if he steps straight up to a mile. Put in #startracker! Give him three runs.
Saturday Doncaster 6.45 CHAMPION HARBOUR 7th 7/2 “One star* win selection @ 7/2 with PP. Well supported, always prominent, led 1½F out, then wandered and faded. Green? Lost action? BHA Stewards Report “Tony Hamilton, the rider of CHAMPION HARBOUR (IRE), which was unplaced, reported that the colt hung badly right inside the final 1 ½ furlongs. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of CHAMPION HARBOUR (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.”
Saturday Doncaster 7.15 Soft C2 7F 3yo’s
Another fascinating race. The winner has been left 3L at the stalls and all seven runners finish within three lengths! All seven who went to post were previous winners. Carrington who finished first is a gelded son on New Approach and will no doubt have a crack at another big handicap off OR92. Race video available on ATR.
Saturday Doncaster 7.15 ANOTHER TOUCH 2nd 5/1 One star* win selection @ 6/1 with Ladbrokes. Fahey earmarked this horse as a possible Royal Ascot Britannia candidate and he did nothing, on this his first run of the campaign, to dispel the idea. Held up, travelled, quickened, failed by half a length giving seven pounds to the winner. Up 2lbs to OR94. Put in #startracker! Follow all season.
Saturday Doncaster 7.15 YOUNG JOHN 5th 12/1 One star* win selection @ 12/1 general. A fine return to the track and surely capable of winning a C2/3 7/8F handicap off OR82 possibly at York? Put in #startracker! Give him three runs.
Monday Chelmsford 3.00 ARISTOCRATIC 3rd 5/4Fav. Two star** win selection @ 13/8 general. Out well to lead, two wide to War Story, second every chance off final bend. One paced. “Pedigree suggests she could improve plenty with age.”
Monday Windsor 6.30 SIR GEORGE SOMERS 6th 17/2 A definite Watching Brief! Perfectly satisfactory start to career. Bit tardy at stalls but travelled in midfield, every chance 2F out, faded final furlong in what could be a hot maiden. (April 25th 6.30pm) The winner of this maiden, CHOREOGRAPHER, should go in your #startracker. Roger Varian rates this son of Sea the Stars, who cost the China Horse Club 850K euros, and there have been Group horse mutterings. He has entries in the Dante at York and the Edward VII at Royal Ascot. The third should go in your #startracker as well. POINTEL is trained by James Fanshawe (who has had a fine April, not something I associate with him, and needs further research) and this son of Le Havre was bought at Arqana. Every chance he may have Gallic targets with the bonuses available. Unfancied (33/1) on debut he kept on well for third.
Monday Wolverhampton 7.20 ALYDAY 3rd 4/6Fav Watching Brief. Gibbons had her four wide throughout! Led at the top of the straight but one pace third. Small, homebred filly who found little. However the winner, Marco Botti trained MALMOSOTA, should go in your #startracker. She is a big, rangy sort who had one run at Newmarket at the back end of last season and on 3yo debut here came from last to first in Wolverhampton’s straight in the style of a decent sort. Put in #startracker! Give her three runs.
Tuesday Bath 3.55 SHABBAH 1st 11/4Fav Watching Brief. Oops! Travelled three wide, prominent. Led 4F out, lengthened and ran away from them. Progressive stayer. Needs Good ground +. Put in #startracker! Give him three runs.
Tuesday Bath 4.30 MAWAANY 2nd 12/1 14/1 with Ladbrokes he’s worthy of a one star* each way selection with the stable in such good form. Slow away losing 4L (?), keen, travelled, pulled out wide off the elbow and that manoeuvre could have cost him the neck he was beaten. Put in #startracker! Give him three runs.
Tuesday Lingfield 5.40 PERCYS ROMANCE 6th 7/1 8/1 with WH, one star* win selection. One paced, ordinary.
Wednesday Pontefract 2.35 HAMMER GUN 4th 11/2 a one star win selection @ 4/1 general. Messy at start. Pushed to gather pace, followed favourite through, kept on one pace. OR74 should be OK.
Wednesday Pontefract 2.35 ARISTOCLES 6th 25/1 Watching Brief. Held up in rear, limited progress in straight. OR68 Newmarket C5 10F+ on a Friday night?
Wednesday Pontefract 3.45 ENGAGE (See above)
Thursday Lingfield 3.20 BARLEYSUGAR (See above)
Thursday Chelmsford 6.30 STREET POET 6th 7/2 Odd ride from Ryan Moore. Out OK, stumbled after 2F, travelled, prominent two wide. Nothing under hands and heels final two furlongs, heavily eased?
BHA Stewards “The Stewards noted that, just after the start, the winner, SYMBOLIC, hung slightly right causing STREET POET (IRE), unplaced, to clip heels and stumble but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved SYMBOLIC’s placing. Ryan Moore, the rider of STREET POET (IRE), unplaced, reported that the colt lost action in the home straight. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the colt failed to reveal any abnormalities.”
£85K 8/10F handicap project for Robert Ng.
Saturday Goodwood 5.10 PELOPONNESE 2nd 7/1 One star* win selection @ 6/1 general.
Kept on fine and is a C5 12F handicap winner waiting to happen. Further the better? Put up 3lbs but this daughter of Montjeu is still on a tasty OR70!! Put in #startracker! Give her three runs.
