Congratulations to all those who spotted that Beardwood and Ballymore Castle are 4yo’s and not 3yo’s. A goodie bag is on its way!

With the Curragh staging its Guineas meeting this weekend some British riders are over there and not riding in the GB on Saturday, they include Ryan Moore, Frankie Dettori and Tony Hamilton. DIPLOMA York 4.55 a one star* wager @ 9/2 with PP.
GABRIAL THE TIGER York 5.25 a one star** each way selection @ 16/1 with WH 1,2,3,4 ¼.
Saturdays Runners (detailed)
LAURENCE Newmarket 5.15 Luca Cumani’s LAURENCE is a horse I’ve been tracking for a while with a Royal Ascot 10F handicap in mind. Non Runner at Newmarket recently when the rain came. Could have ideal conditions here in 10F, good or better ground and a win here off OR90 would put him smack on for Ascot. I expect further improvement as a 4yo from this son of Dubawi, trained the “Cumani” way.
VALLEY OF FIRE York 2.05 Lightly raced, 4yo gelded son of Firebreak. Won his 2yo maiden here at York over 6F and was 3rd in the big Sales race at the Ebor meeting. Finished his 2yo campaign off with a last of eight in the G3 Tattersalls Somerville Stakes but sent off 4/1 third favourite. Only two runs as a 3yo, both over 6F and both at Newmarket in July. Reappeared as a 4yo when unsighted in the Victoria Cup at Ascot a fortnight ago. Prior to that race trainer William Haggas had told the RP “.. are a bit short of work and will come on for the run.” Currently has an OR93 and C2/3, 6/7F probably York very much on the agenda. Put VALLEY OF FIRE in your #startracker Olderhorse4yo+.
WAR STORY Newmarket 2.20 Came to my attention when giving a hiding to a #SuperStoute filly, Aristocratic, I fancied at Chelmsford. OR85 could have seriously underestimated his talent. Ears prick up when Cumani is asking about a handicap mark! Luca Cumani Website 26th April “We have liked War Story for a while and it will be interesting to see what handicap mark he is given.” Put WAR STORY in your #startracker 3yo’s. 18/05/15 OR85 One more win for Ascot? He is a four star**** NAP win selection @ 5/2 general.
BEAVERBROOK Haydock 3.05 Was a not quite staying fifth in the Havana Gold Newmarket Listed Stakes won three weeks ago by Hawkbill in a race I thought might throw up some winners and my notes say “OR97 needs to find his trip (9F?). Possibly C2 10F handicap round Chester or York?” For a prominent racer Adam Kirby may have his work cut out from Stall 14 but may help Garcia in stall 13 if he does get out and across! Has to be a Watching Brief.
CHIEF WHIP Haydock 3.05 My notes say “US bred son of Giants Causeway cost Messrs Magnier, Tabor and Smith $250K and is not at Coolmore but with Richard Hannon. Only ran the once as a 2yo but couldn’t have been much more impressive. Out OK, travelled well but had to sit and suffer just behind the leaders waiting for a gap but when he did get daylight he really quickened up in the style of a good horse. The 2nd and 3rd have both won since suggesting Chief Whip is an OR95+ horse and possibly a Group contender. He has an entry in the Irish 2000 Guineas. That run was at the end of July and he had plenty of entries later but never appeared, which suggests an issue or two? Reappeared as Sandown as a 3yo, midfield, held up, Ryan Moore pulled him out to challenge 2F out, just about led 1½F out, one pace third. Better ground may bring improvement and Richard Hannon Jnr is of the opinion that “mine have needed a run”.”
2nd 6/1 York C3 7F Hcp 76-95 3yo Intelligent ride from Ryan Moore who from a poor draw gradually made his way across behind runners and Castle Harbour, having had the run of the race, was just too good. Passed eighteen horses in final three furlongs. OR 86 92
Has to be a player from stall 4 in this C2 8F Haydock Silver Bowl but a saver not the main selection because it’s Sean Levey and not Ryan Moore and Chief Whip only ran ten days ago. One star* win selection @ 5/1 general.
TATHQEEF Newmarket 3.30 Notes say “As in the Fielden Stakes Tathqeef was one paced but could still be competitive off OR95 in a decent 3yo handicap. Has entries in the Dante, the Derby and Edward VII at Royal Ascot but this son of Tapit looks a Good/Firm miler to me. Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes (Listed) 10F 3yo” Bit surprised to see him in a 10F Listed race with David Probert on board. Has to be a Watching Brief.
HEAVENS GUEST York 2.05 I think even with Adam McNamara taking 7lbs off HG needs help from the handicapper and a downpour! Thoughts backed up by his trainer in his sportinglife.com column “Heaven’s Guest looks a shade too high in the weights to be winning the titanbet.co.uk Stakes (2.05) at York but the handicapper tells me he ran to a mark of 103 on several occasions last season which is why he’s not been dropped in the ratings since finishing down the field at Ascot earlier in the month. I’m not totally convinced myself, but we’re very happy with him and the horse is in good form, while any rain would obviously help him as he’s done most of his winning on good or slightly softer ground.” OR103 Has to be a Watching Brief.
GABRIALS KING Haydock 2.30 He won’t mind the ground nor the trip but I will wait until he’s in a C3 16F handicap on good ground off OR90. Current OR92 and I expect a running on sixth here! Has to be a Watching Brief.
ANGEL GABRIAL York 2.40 He hasn’t won a race since he hacked up in the Northumberland Plate under George Chaloner almost two years ago but here is a Listed race over 14F on the Knavesmire he must have a chance in. He was third in this race last year to Clever Cookie and he will relish this quicker ground and Chaloner is back on board. At 8/1 with WH I think he is well worth a one star* win selection.
BALLYMORE CASTLE Haydock 4.45 Original notes say “Didn’t win as a 3yo but competed in the Sales races and at Listed level. Seems to go on any ground and could easily land a C2 or C3 6F handicap off 95. Didn’t stay 7F on his final run. Will need to be monitored as there is a possibility that he keeps a bit for himself? Ran in a 6F C3 handicap at Doncaster’s opening meeting, travelled really well to the 2F pole and was just one paced. Fahey had said prior to the race “Ballymore Castle has been a badly handicapped horse since his two-year-old days and might still need some help from the assessor.” This run looked like they were trying to remedy that situation!” Well they have remedied that situation and off OR88 he is in a C3 0-90 6F handicap on a flat track. That ticks just about every box for me and I wouldn’t be surprised if David Nolan banged him out of stall 1 and made every yard! I can’t desert him now and he is a two star** each way selection @ 14/1 with WH and Ladbrokes 1,2,3, ¼.
CANYARI Haydock 4.45 His turn isn’t far away and he is back down to his last winning mark. Not sure he is a C2 winning horse (038) or that he is best suited by York (008). We will wait for a C3 probably at Doncaster. Has to be a Watching Brief.
HIGH BAROQUE Newmarket 5.15 #FantasticMrFahey is keener on this horse than I am. “He hasn’t had a lot of racing but has progressed well and is a horse I like. He’s going to be aimed at some decent handicaps.” This week he told sportinglife.com “High Baroque looking to take advantage of a low weight in the Mainstay Handicap (5.15). He progressed well last season, getting better as it went on, and this looks an ideal spot to get him started again. He might just need the run but he could be alright this year, whether Saturday is his day then we’ll see – fingers crossed anyway!” As with most of these US bred horses I want to see him run first. Has to be a Watching Brief.
GABRIAL THE TIGER York 5.25 C4 Gentleman Riders handicaps are not my betting medium of choice but this chap has a squeak. His pilot Mickey Ennis knows what he’s doing, the horse will go on Good to Firm and has a prominent style of running. The downside is being drawn widest in stall 18 and is he good enough? Need to see the market. He is a one star** each way selection @ 16/1 with WH 1,2,3,4 ¼.
ANOTHER TOUCH Haydock 3.05 This will be the fastest ground this rapidly improving colt has faced but he is supposedly the better drawn of the Fahey pair in stall two. I think AT will be a solid handicapper with some cut in the ground and there are some Group horses lurking in this field. I can also see it getting messy on that inside rail in the home straight but I hope he gets a clean tow into the race and he is a one star* win selection @ 12/1 general. GARCIA Haydock 3.05 I think this horse could be special. Rangy son of Paco Boy who has already been gelded, he travels strongly and he has gears. The prodigal son, Paul Hanagan, has the ride and not many ride Haydock better but he is going to have to be on his toes to get Garcia home from stall 13 of 17. He is a three star*** each way selection @ 8/1 general 1,2,3,4 ¼ .
STAMP HILL Goodwood 3.25 After his last run at Newmarket I noted “Had widest draw, did well to get some cover and kept on for a close 5th. C2 7F 3yo should be fine” having previously written “whether he is a C2 Saturday horse I’m not sure?” A Goodwood sixteen runner handicap is a lottery at the best of times and he has stall 15 of 16 with a 90 degree bend after 2F! If Patrick Mathers could find a seam out wide for this strong traveller there are possibilities and @ 20/1 general he is a one star* each way selection.
FIREDANSER Haydock 5.20 Won his maiden at Newmarket but his overall form doesn’t scream “well handicapped Saturday winner”! OR77 looks about right. His trainer is however bullish, “This should be right up Firedanser’s street on his first outing. He’s fit and well, ready to roll and is quite unexposed in handicaps. He’s been dropped 5lb since a slightly disappointing run at Epsom last September so has been given a chance there and he looks to have strengthened up this year.” Keep an eye on the market but for the moment is a Watching Brief.
YOUNG JOHN Haydock 5.20 Excellent early season 2yo form but it all went wrong at Royal Ascot and reading the thoughts of his handler suggests he may need more counselling than training! “Young John still needs his confidence back after losing it when we ran him in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot last season. He came back a bit jarred up after that and wouldn’t mind a spot of rain this weekend..” Despite the interesting jockey booking of Graham Lee, has to be a Watching Brief.
ARCTIC FEELING York 3.50 As the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly AF shouldn’t be competitive off OR96 in a C2. No idea, play if you want, I’ll pass.
KINGS FETE Goodwood 2.15 A favourite horse in the SimpleSimonSays… days but not seen on a racecourse since finishing 9th in the St. Leger 616 days ago!! Has to be a Watching Brief.
MAINSTREAM Haydock 1.55 Goes up one Grade, two furlongs and six pounds but none of that should stop this strapping daughter of Dansili, owned by the Queen, going in again. Jockey Stevie Donohoe, who keeps the ride, said “ She’s a big unit and needs space!” She should get plenty of that in this six runner field. She is a two star** win selection @7/4 with Coral.
BARLEYSUGAR Newmarket 2.20 This looks to be her right trip and Grade, just a niggling doubt about Newmarkets undulations and if she is better on sand? Her season opening third on the AW at Lingfield should have brought her on. Last seasons 2yo notes said “Second on debut over Kempton’s AW 7F on debut this home bred daughter of Kyllachy was massively impressive when she returned to the same venue, same trip and hosed up in a C4 maiden. The second, third and sixth all won next time and the sixth has won since. She was then made 5/1 favourite for a C2 8F fillies nursery on turf, on Good ground and she finished a disappointing tenth of twelve.” I was looking to have a bet but just can’t see her beating War Story.
ARAB POET Goodwood 3.25 Form behind Massaat and Garcia suggest he may be well in, OR85, but the ground may be too quick, he’s drawn in stall 14 of 16 which I’m not sure about and he is ridden by Jimmy Quinn who isn’t a personal favourite. So it is a Watching Brief for me.
THETIS Haydock 3.40 She drops back 2f from a mile to 6F and so tries sprinting for the first time in Listed fillies company against a Wokingham winner! Watching Brief for me.
VOLITION Newmarket 4.40 £300K daughter of Dark Angel who showed nothing at Chelmsford last August on her only 2yo start. Has to be a Watching Brief.
DIPLOMA York 4.55 I love horses getting an opening OR90 and running with top weight in a 0-90 handicap. Even better if a filly stays in filly only company! With Daniel Tudhope riding for #SuperStoute and HM the Queen, this daughter of Dubawi out of a Montjeu mare steps up from 7 to 10 furlongs and is well worth a one star* wager @ 9/2 with PP.
