Epsom 4.30 ACROSS THE STARS Watching Brief.
Lingfield 8.20 AFLAME Two star** win @ 11/8 with Betfred.
Epsom 3.10 POSTPONED A flag bearer for this blog (and SimpleSimonSays…) over the past twelve months and should outclass these. However taking odds on against two in form fillies on soft ground at Epsom just doesn’t appeal! Watching Brief.
Epsom 5.15 KARRAAR Interesting horse. Previously trained by Richard hannon for H-a-M but owner sent Karraar to the sales last autumn and William Haggas bought him to run in his mother’s old colours (Remember Silver Buck?) now used by Somerville Lodge Limited! I think young William has a plan for this horse that I think involves York and quite possibly the Ebor? Currently on OR92, a career high, probably needs one more win to get in the Ebor. Whether it’s at Epsom today I’m not sure but he won first time out last year, has won three out of his last six, Hanagan keeps the ride and drawn in stall 10 is not impossible. One star* win @ 10/1 with WH.
Curragh 6.00 FORT DEL ORO Like the filly, the race and the price! Two star** win @ 10/3 with PP.
(Edward Lynam) Not for the first time she has caught my eye, this 4yo daughter of Lope de Vega is lightly raced but she sees out 6F strongly and has a very high cruising speed. Comfortable winner of a 5F Listed race at Leopardstown on 4yo reappearance and interesting to see how high she can go. Entries in Curragh, Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (Group 2), Curragh, TRM Ballyogan Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares), Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) and Newmarket (july), Darley July Cup (Group 1). Curragh 6.30 PORTAGE Another favourite of this correspondent and this race is one of two things, either a stepping stone to Group success or I think the more likely a pipe opener for the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and THEN Group success. Mick Halfords yard has recently come out of the doldrums having it’s first turf winner of the season from just 13 runners. Watching Brief.
Epsom 2.00 CARTAGO Fabulous run first time up this season when second in a similar event at Newbury behind Imperial Aviator giving away 6lb. After this Derby weekend that may be proved to have been a big ask! Frankie Dettori rides, drawn well in 4 has to be a one star* win @ 5/1 with Ladbrokes.
Epsom 4.30 MASSAAT A solid second in the 2000 Guineas and IF he does stay must be thereabouts. One star* win @ 16/1 with PP.
Epsom 4.30 IDAHO Running on well in the Derrinstown after a troubled passage. Course and trip could suit and bred to win a Derby! One star* win @ 16/1 with PP.
Musselburgh 5.40 ORMSKIRK Recently moved from Fahey and stepped up to a mile. I’m not sure he will get the trip. Watching Brief.
Musselburgh 1.40 DESIRE Owned by the trainer the daughter of Kylachhy has won over this trip in this grade off just 2lb lower and Adam MacNamara takes off 7lb. Races prominently, won making all, drawn in stall 1, why not? One star* each way @ 11/1 with Coral and WH.
Doncaster 3.40 HIGH BAROQUE Notebook says “A curious, lightly raced American bred horse currently owned by the trainer himself. Unraced as a 2yo he made his debut on the AW in February 2016 and made steady progress winning a C5 10F maiden at Pontefract and when last seen was runner up on handicap debut. Why curious? Well he cost $500K as a foal, his mother is Coolmore’s Classic winner Yesterday (Irish 1000 Gns 1st, 2nd in English Oaks!) and #amazingMrFahey says “he’s going to be aimed at some decent handicaps”. Travels well and should get 12F, could be anything!” If he is as good as #FantasticMrFahey thinks should hack up here! Two star** win @ 4/1 general.
Epsom 5.50 GEORGE BOWEN Could be a major player in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot in a fortnight’s time but is he a trier here? Spencer is on board and gets on well with him but come from behind at Epsom is fraught with dangers. The pot is worthwhile and I think they’ll give it a go. One star* win @ 15/2 with PP.
Epsom 2.00 DARK DEVIL Steps up 2F here in a warm C2 3yo event. Drawn in stall 9 which should give Paul Hanagan plenty of options. Likeable horse and a One star* each way selection @ 12/1 general.
Two promising seconds in C4 maidens before narrowly getting home in a C5 maiden over 7F at Redcar. Travels well and looks a trier. He has already been gelded and 3yo mile handicaps look to be his bag. First time out this season at Chester 3rd 7/1 Some late market support. On toes, jig-jogging. Out last, taken to rail from wide draw, dropped in. 3F out chose to take the brave man’s route up the inside and kept on for third without really threatening. OR86.
Musselburgh 2.15 BACK TO BOND Won his C5 maiden OK but not sure he is up to a C3 0-90 Saturday handicap. Watching Brief.
Doncaster 2.30 DACOITY Not good enough to win a maiden. Watching Brief.
Placed in three low grade 2yo maidens last season, now gelded, runs in those lucky “Touch” colours. On 3yo debut ran in a C5 6F Pontefract maiden but had little chance drawn 10 of 11 and duly finished a never competitive seventh of eleven. Goes handicapping off OR72 and starts at Nottingham over 6F, C5 level, drawn 1, i.e furthest away from the rail and “the golden highway”!? Being a son of Dick Turpin he should get a bit further in time.
RP analysis said “Prominent on outer, pushed along 3f out, ridden over 2f out, soon weakened (op 10/3 tchd 4/1).” Can’t see him winning a maiden so it will have to be a handicap off OR73. Not convinced?
Musselburgh 5.40 NOVINOPHOBIA Notebook says “I can see him making all on Good to Firm over a sharp 7F at the likes of Catterick, Musselburgh and possibly Chester and even York.” Even drawn 1 Doncaster is a tough place to make all! OR77 73, get down a grade! Watching Brief.
Musselburgh 2.50 KOCOLLADA impressive on debut steps up to C2. Watching Brief.
Newcastle 6.10 GEEGO 2yo. Watching Brief.
Newcastle 6.10 VATICAN HILL 2yo. Watching Brief.
Musselburgh 3.25 YANGTZE Ran on in eye-catching fashion in his last run. Well weighted, obvious improver and #SuperStoute sends one horse to Scotland, well drawn in 3, Stevie Donohoe rides. Two star** win @ 7/2 general.
Epsom 2.00 POET’S WORD Stoute likes this race, Ryan Moore rides and well housed in Stall 2. Notes say “Came on my radar as impressing on the gallops last Autumn. £300K son of Poets Voice whose two runs so far have been “educational”. Fourth on debut at the very backend of last season in a Newmarket C4 7F maiden keeping on under hands and heels, again a running on third three weeks ago in a C5 8F maiden on the sand at Chelmsford. Quicker ground and an extra 2F should help and interesting to see if he’s ridden more prominently.
1st 9/4JF Ryan Moore excellent again, giving the horse every chance. Travelled in fifth, asked 3½F out, took time to find a gap but picked up well when he got racing room, put his head down and tried all the way to the line. It will be interesting to see where he is entered next.”
The problem is the price. 5/2 general! In a 15 runner competitive handicap at Epsom that is too short. Watching Brief.
Epsom 4.30 ULYSSES Day of reckoning? Has a little form and a lot of potential. Three star*** win @ 9/1 with PP and Coral.
Epsom 4.30 ACROSS THE STARS Would be a wonderful story for Keiran Fallon but I think they are both out of their depth here. Watching Brief.
Lingfield 8.20 AFLAME Every chance if building on debut at Windsor. Ted Durcan’s only ride of the day. Two star** win @ 11/8 with Betfred.
