4pm today I put on twitter “Simon Moore @mooresthepity Ascot seems fair, ground and draw! Get with the pace and don’t ask horse to make up too much ground! Probably need to really stay trip!”
First three races won by Quality. Simple. Tepin, Breeders Cup winner, real class. Caravaggio destined for big things! Profitable, best current sprinter in Europe.
Happy days! Frankie steals the Queen Anne, Awtad murders The Gurkha , not Ryan’s finest ride methinks!
So on to Wednesday.
2.30 I will play Sir Michael Stoute against the field. See blog #SuperStouteRoyalAscot2016
Thikriyaat two star** win @ 9/1 general. Forge one star* each way @ 14/1 general.
3.05 Seventeen 2yo fillies over 5F. Not my cup of tea. Love to see #FantasticMrFahey go close with Kocollada who was impressive at Musselburgh beating the colts and/or Vona who caused a bit of a surprise winning a Listed event at York! French, Irish and American contenders!! No idea! The Wesley Ward Lady Aurelia is meant to be a tad rapid.
3.40 G2 straight mile race for the older fillies and a strong international challenge. Forget the draw, forget the going it is all about class and Godolphin who run four! Usherette hacked up in the G2 Dahlia and has soft ground form and I am going with Lucida who went off 9/2F for the 1000 Guineas last year and then got a mare of a ride from Kevin Manning in the Coronation last June. She’s class and trainer Jim Bolger has picked up recently.
Lucida one star* win @ 8/1 general.
4.20 Time for afternoon tea. An odds on Japanese raider for the G1 10F Prince of Wales, A Shin Hikari. I sniff a turn up!
5.00 8F C2 mile handicap, I love the Hunt Cup. The first task in this type of race is to identify where the speed is? A real conundrum this year as the only possibility I can find is Glory Awaits, 2nd to New Approach in the 2013 2000 Guineas, and ridden by Jamie Spencer!! Surely Mr Spencer can’t make every yard, can he!
I have to nail my colours to the mast and it is with a colt who has won over course and distance on Good and Soft, who has won over further in Listed company and is a favourite of this correspondent. It is of course Portage. Won a Listed 10F race on ground too quick on 4yo debut when I wrote “this race is one of two things, either a stepping stone to Group success or I think the more likely a pipe opener for the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and THEN Group success. Mick Halfords yard has recently come out of the doldrums having its first turf winner of the season from just 13 runners.”
Thirty runners, one each way bet, Portage three stars*** each way @ 11/1 1,2,3,4. ¼.
5.35 It’s Stoute again, this time for Her Maj, a belated birthday prezzie! See #SuperStouteRoyalAscot2016 .
Diploma one star* each way @ 10/1 general.
