Today’s racing is like the Pakistan bowling attack, challenging, entertaining and there is a need to be somewhat circumspect!
Ascot 3.30 DELVE #SuperStoute saddles this daughter of Dansili and the Racing Post has it spot on, “Lightly raced potential improver; this harder and deserted by Moore”. Richard Kingscote takes the ride and the Official Handicapper thinks she would have to improve over a stone to be competitive. As she goes in search of Black Type has to be a Watching Brief. Could well blow a handy handicap mark OR87!
Ascot 4.05 MASTERPAVER Just about a stone above his last winning mark. Steps back 2F and his consistency deserves a place in this C2 handicap. #FantasticMrFahey sets a real poser by booking young Mr Spencer and will he switch Masterpaver off out the back and do his running where it counts, in the home straight? Spencer is in cracking form, ten wins in the last fortnight and six in the last eleven rides! One star* win @ 5/1 general.
#FantasticMrFahey sends four to Thirsk.
Thirsk 2.30 CHEERFUL CHARACTER 30K euros purchase, daughter of Tagula. Not a lot to shout about, Watching Brief.
Thirsk 3.05 SPRINGFORTH Earlier in the season I blogged “Next win will probably be in a nursery.” It was! Won last time, C4 6F at Catterick. Too many here making their handicap mark for a bet! Watching Brief.
Thirsk 3.40 STARLIGHT ROMANCE Drops down a grade to C4 and goes up a furlong to seven. Entitled to be competitive on her two runs to date and this daughter of Excelebration is worth a one star* win @ 3/1 general.
Thirsk 3.40 TOMORROWCOMES Curious filly this! By Oasis Dream out of Yesterday, who won the Irish 1000 guineas and was second in the Epsom Oaks and is by Sadlers Wells. That is a strong Coolmore pedigree and this filly was led out of the Arqana sale ring unsold at 300K euros. How the hell does #FantasticMrFahey get to own it? Has to be an intriguing Watching Brief. Is she diminutive? Has she a limp?
Thirsk 4.15 BAHAMIAN BIRD Beware of the home bred filly! Daughter of Bahamian Bounty in the colours of Lady Juliet Tadgill who always had horses with Chris Wall. Only positive I can see is that #FantasticMrFahey has put his “Go Racing in Yorkshire” Festival Charity bet on Bahamian Bird. Starts off on just OR60. Watching Brief.
#FantasticMrFahey sends four to York.
York 6.00 BACK TO BOND An OnlyIf.. horse and the files say “Owned by PD Smith Holdings who are Property Developers based in Strensall just outside York and unsurprisingly Back to Bond, an eight race maiden has had five of those runs on the Knavesmire. His three thirds show he has talent but to win he probably needs to drop to C5 7F 0-75 handicap and they don’t run many of those at York.” Watching Brief.
York 7.00 REINSTORM Looks nursery material. Watching Brief.
York 7.00 HONOURABLE Cheveley Park homebred and I’m just not a fan of her sire, Rip van Winkle. Watching Brief.
York 8.00 STARDRIFTER This horse reminds me of Lord Aeryn who had the same connections. Always consistent, always travelled like a winner but rarely got his head in front or his handicap down! Stardrifter has plenty going for him here in trip, ground, grade, draw but not at 5/1. Treble those odds he may have been an each way poke but has to be a Watching Brief.
#FantasticMrFahey told sportinglife.com “We’ve runners on both days of the York Music Showcase fixture starting with Back To Bond in the Think As One Apprentice Handicap. He won at Wetherby in May but has disappointed the last twice, including at this track. He needs to bounce back. We run two in the Best One Median Auction Maiden Stakes. Reinstorm is probably a nursery type and I’d be surprised if he could win a York maiden. Honourable is quite a nice filly who we like. She makes her debut here and while one or two could be too good on this occasion, she will win her maiden. Stardrifter is drawn wider than ideal in ten for the Novus Handicap but is running okay at the moment, a little better than his finishing positions suggest. He’s not without a chance.”
York 7.30 DIPLOMA #SuperStoute sends the Queen’s classy filly to York for this 10F Listed event. The Notebook says “5th in the 3yo Fillies Listed 8F Sandringham Handicap I am not sure what to make of this race. The winner, Persuasive, was the best horse and Frankie Dettori had her in position ‘A’ and got first run with the next four to finish all coming from behind her. I am putting up the Queen’s Diploma for two main reasons, firstly I think she is a better horse at ten furlongs and secondly Ryan Moore didn’t exactly throw the kitchen sink at her to get third! She has an Official Rating of 100 which would be interesting if she chose to carry top weight in a 3yo fillies 10F handicap. The Listed 10F Lyric Stakes at York for 3yo+ fillies on Friday 22nd July could be a suitable race if she goes off in search of Black Type.” And here she is with Uncle Ted in the plate. Today’s best bet, three star*** win @ 11/4 general.
Chepstow 5.50 MEGAN LILY Just the one horse sent on the long haul to South Wales and 7lb claimer Natalie Hambling rides. Excellent debut but highly tried last twice for this daughter of Dragon Pulse for the shrewd Nick Bradley Racing. No idea, Watching Brief.
Newmarket 5.40 NORMANDY KNIGHT Goes on the ground, wins in C5, wants a stiff mile so why not? The 3yo’s don’t look world beaters. One star* each way @ 12/1 general.
Newmarket 6.40 CHAMPION HARBOUR I think the quicker ground could well bring improvement from this well weighted gelding and he could go close. One star* win @ 12/1 general.
Three-year-olds sold to HK from Europe so far: Defrocked, Primitivo, Chief Whip, Out And About. 1st and 4th in G2 Italian Derby Saent, Biz Heart. And plenty more to come! Andrew Hawkins @AndrewNJHawkins 1pm Thursday
I had also read that Burnt Sugar had been sold to the Far East but it seems he has been acquired by Middleham Park (as have Grendisar and Naddir) and stays with Richard Hannon.
