I thought yesterday was about to be a huge Celebration with fifty yards to go but he hung on for fourth and we had a minor celebration and the day was paid for! As for Fidaawy I am at a loss for words! Fell out of the stalls, didn’t want to settle and then never put into race. Still convinced this is a talented creature but needs a quicker pace to run at and can’t get that with his present handicap mark so does he go straight to Group company or the alternative opinion could be that he is an in bred, pampered screw!!
Today is yet again a really difficult day to find a bet! However when the bookies are going 7/4 the favourite in a 19 runner handicap over a mile at Goodwood you just have to take him on!
Goodwood 2.00 Mount Logan and Kings Fete have both done us favours but this is a trappy seven runner race and I see no value.
Goodwood 2.35 Cymric, Emotionless, Forge and Thikriyaat are all in the tracker so it’s all or nothing and I’ve chosen nothing! If you twisted my arm I would probably have to go for Forge, maybe. Watching Brief.
Goodwood 3.10 OK, Franklin D is drawn 1, Ryan Moore rides, the handicapper says he’s 10lbs well in, won well last time and from an in form yard BUT at 7/4 just has to be taken on! Those with long term memories and readers of 57SimpleSimonSays… may recall I had Room Key on the radar after he finished third to Highland Reel at this meeting as a 2yo in 2014. Last summer here he ran in the G3 Thoroughbred Stakes that saw his Official Rating rise to a peak of OR103. Here he just sneaks into the BetFred Mile handicap as second reserve off just OR90 and Joe Fanning takes the ride. Drawn in stall 2 gives him a chance of a more prominent position than usual.
Two choices, either take 40/1 with Ladbrokes and five places or 50/1 elsewhere for four places, either way he is a one star* each way selection.
The King George 5F sprint, the Nursery and the 7F fillies G3 hold no interest as a punting medium.
Goodwood 5.30 This 3yo 11F handicap should be right up my street but the only runner of any interest is Poets Word, #SuperStoute’s topweight with Ryan Moore in the saddle. Racing Post probably right in saying “Only fourth when well backed latest, but earlier maiden win has worked out really well”. Last race was at Epsom, a course which doesn’t suit everyone, on ground probably softer than ideal. My notes suggest that Good to Firm is ideal as is the extra furlong, he is on an OR88 in a 0-90 handicap and his draw in stall 3 is fine. However I can see no value in a top priced 9/4 on the High Street. Too many improvers such as Al Neksh, Combative and Indulged! Watching Brief.
#FantasticMrFahey runs four at Goodwood and just one at Thirsk, very quiet for a Friday, and with three at Goodwood drawn in double figures, Scofflaw with Jamie Spencer aboard in the 6F nursery would be the only possibility but Mark Johnston has three runners which doesn’t leave much room in the winners enclosure!
